Changes [Sep. 16th, 2010|04:37 pm]
I'm finally moved in to my new house.

And I feel accomplished.

I am very excited regarding making this place look cool. I rented an apartment for the longest time, and in a set-up like that, there's a sense of being limited in terms of doing some cool interior design and stuff, since you can't just hang whatever frames you have, and buy nice furniture, etc -- since the place is not yours.

My place is still untidy, with boxes and boxes of books (serious ones, yes.) and comics (Didn't realize I have sooooo many), personal stuff, and several heavy work equipments. But for now, arranging this place will have to wait. I have a deadline next week, and I've lost a substantial amount of time moving here. But I'm happy.:)

-------------------------

In other news, I've booked my first ever trip to the US. I'm also planning to go to New York Comic Con 2010, and hope to bump into all the professionals whose work I admire and those whom I have worked with. It's going to be very hard to draw the line between being a fanboy and being a comics creator, haha. But hey, I'm living the dream, right? ;)

It's going to be my first time. A stranger in a strange land. This should be an adventure.

UPDATE:  Kat Garcia = Stunning! Haha salamat Kat, napasaya mo ko! Nakakatuwa!

A Renewal [Jul. 27th, 2010|11:49 pm]
So this is how it feels to do nothing. Hahaha!

In the past months, I've been tied to my chair coloring and sending out pages upon pages of multiple titles I've been juggling since April. I guess I've forgotten how it feels to just stretch back, and sleep for more than six hours without having to wake up and immediately feel fidgety over the amount of work I have to finish on a given day.

Not that I'm complaining. I LOVE my job, and I don't take it for granted. EVER.

But as the saying goes, "all colors and no play makes Jay old and gray." Or something like that. Haha.

So today, I spent the day catching up on my reading. I've got lots of books and comics I've yet to read, that I don't even know which ones to read first.

Tomorrow, I plan to get some exercise. Maybe some jumping rope for cardio, and just some push-ups. Little routines that I hope to develop into a habit. Cause that's more effective, I think.

Wow, I can't believe I've actually updated this blog. Never thought I'd get back to this old thing. I used to blog regularly, but after the events in 2009, I just didn't feel like writing how my "this-or- that" day went. My bro said that maybe I was traumatized. Well, whatever, there are just some things you'd rather not remember.

Could this be the start of a renewed love for journaling? I don't know.

Needless to say, this actually feels refreshing.:)

From a short hiatus... [Sep. 14th, 2009|02:15 pm]
And after a very long while, I 19m back in Multiply! Hooray!

Just cause I 19m really not doing anything for the moment.

It 19s been two weeks since I last worked. And I 19ve just sort of bummed around. No, scratch that 13 actually I 19ve been sick, and the painful recurring swelling of my face happened again 13 so how 19d you like that huh? Had trouble eating because it hurt.

Yeah, my work-free two weeks has been just hell for me.

It 19s funny though because I thought I was going to have a great time during my short break. I planned on going to Iligan with my mother to visit my cute baby niece and our relatives there, and also meet up with this girl I sort of reconnected with. God knows how long I 19ve ached to visit my hometown. But of course, sadyang minalas ata ako 13 so I 19m left here in smoggy Manila.

Was supposed to go on a blind date too, but the woman flaked on me. Something about her parents picking her up from her dorm or something. Raincheck nalang daw.

So I had the swelling checked by a dentist (since the EENT said that there were a couple of infected root on both of my front teeth. He suggested to just remove the infected teeth through surgery which costs 60,000!). Of course, I opted for the dentist who can operate it with a more affordable rate and at the same time SAVE my teeth! So yay! But when she drained the swelling 13 DAMN DAMN DAMN 13 no, I didn 19t cry, just 1cshed 1d tears. It was that painful! Root canal I can handle, but that first procedure was killer! All I can see were prisms. My tears were welling up under the bright white light of the dental chair that I just saw rainbows, man!

Tomorrow, I 19m going back to the dentist for root canal. And I 19ll be making two more visits afterwards. The last one would be the operation where she 19ll be scraping the encapsulated cyst from my teeth 19s roots. Damn. Hey, konting tiis nalang to. I 19m sort of tired of this thing anyway, I 19ve been suffering over this since 1997!

So my editors just emailed to inform me that they 19ll be sending me new pages of War Machine and X-men: Psylocke to color. Guess I 19m back to work! Rakenrol!

TO ALL FREELANCERS, YOU NEED TO SEE THIS [Jun. 26th, 2009|05:14 am]
To all artists and freelancers out there -- YOU NEED TO SEE THIS!!

<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/R2a8TRSgzZY&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/R2a8TRSgzZY&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>

Damn, this is so 100% @$#%@^# TRUE!!!! Kaya nakakatawa!

And it's partly our fault for allowing these things to happen. As freelancers kasi, we are always looking for clients, and the clients think that we need them more than they need us -- so they abuse us! Kesyo takot tayo na baka they wont hire us next time kung di tayo makikipag compromise sa kanila, or "kaya yan ng pamangkin ko eh", o "let me consult my wife muna" blah blah blah!

Me and my friends have had countless experiences na gaya nito. And we've learned that we don't really win if we give in to these type of clients. More often than not, they won't really hire us next time anyway kasi one time project lang yung pinagawa nila.

At kaninong tiyan ang kumakalam? For sure, hindi sa kliyente.

So friends, let's do ourselves a favor -- let's not deal with clients like these. We must not undersell ourselves. We should know what our skills are worth, cause if we don't recognize even that, there's no point going freelance.

Let's respect ourselves. Kasi if we don't, sino nalang? And no, lalong hindi ang kliyente, lalo na kung nakikita niyang we second guess ourselves.

Stay away from these clients.

Cause really, it's not worth the grief.

-- di ko naman nilalahat. marami naman ding matinong kliyente. be on guard lang sa mga kliyenteng sakit sa ulo!

Take on the Hayden Kho sex video scandals [May. 21st, 2009|08:24 am]
Since I'm on a very tight deadline, I can't really post a long entry, but here's my take on the Hayden Kho sex video scandals.

Not to generalize or anything, but it seems very hypocritical for any of us to watch the videos and then rant about what Hayden did and express sympathy to the women involved. It's like we're washing our hands, a poor attempt to justify our watching of the videos, which is not what any of the women involved would want us to do -- even if it is just out of curiousity.

Frankly, whatever Hayden and his women did is none of our business. We're just prolonging the sufferings of the women involved.

However, Hayden brutally betrayed the women's trust in him when he videotaped them without their knowledge during sex. A very dishonorable act. He should answer to the women and the courts.

If we're truly sympathetic to the victims, let us not watch the leaked sex videos then.

My name in the Inquirer :D [May. 18th, 2009|10:26 am]
Well, what do you know, I got a brief (very brief) mention in an Inquirer article.:D

The article is about the Filipino invasion of mainstream comic books, and listed names of comics book artists of Filipino descent "who bear watching".

And here's the entry about me --

"Jay David Ramos: A colorist as well, he helped ink 1cDarkhawk. 1d

Like I said, very brief. But it's not everyday you get your name written in the Inquirer.:D I think I'm the only one listed as color artist.

The information is not entirely correct, as I did not ink Marvel Comics' Darkhawk. But yes, I did color the issues.

Astig!

Free Comic Book Day 2009 coverage [May. 3rd, 2009|10:08 pm]
FREE COMIC BOOK DAY WAS A BLAST!

I arrived to a long line of fans and enthusiasts waiting for the signing to officially open. I saw Carlo Pagulayan and Wilson Tortosa at the signing tables and proceeded to greeting them. I guess we were the early birds haha! Comic Odyssey owner Sand welcomed me and handed me my free comics and the very cool FCBD toy!:D

Sculptor extraordinaire Norman Faustino, Wilson Tortosa, Me, Gerry Alanguilan, and Carlo Pagulayan(seated).

The signing started at 1pm, and it was awesome! I had a great time meeting fellow fans, chatting with them, and signing their books. Some of them even actually followed my work, to my surprise! And to get a comment that my work made a difference to the art of a certain title was truly humbling, which makes all the hard work worth it!:)

THE SUPERPROS -- Leinil Yu (artist, Secret Invasion, Ultimate Hulk vs Wolverine), Jay Anacleto (artist, Marvels: Eye of the Camera), and inker Gerry Alanguilan (Superman: Birthright, High Roads; and creator of Elmer)

Got to hang out with superpros Leinil Yu, Gerry Alanguilan, and Jay Anacleto! I am a big fan of theirs since highschool. I remember I used to collect newspaper articles about them, so it was an awesome experience for me. Leinil Yu gladly gave me his thoughts and advices on stuff I asked him about. Jay Anacleto invited us to ride with him going to Druid's Keep comics shop after dinner.

Me with longtime collaborator and partner in crime Harvey Tolibao

Of course, got to spend time with my former studiomates like Harvey Tolibao and Stephen Segovia. These two have been my friends since the first day I worked professionally. I was there the first time they showed their portfolios to our agent many years ago. I have seen how these guys improved A LOT since then. Their works were already good before, but they are way way better now, slowly making names for themselves internationally. So it was a happy reunion of sorts.

Sandy, the owner of the Comic Odyssey, treated all of us to a celebratory dinner afterwards.  And gave all of us commemmorative Free Comic Book Day t-shirts.

Me, Stephen Segovia, Ernest "Mr. Metro Comic Con Organizer" Hernandez, and Harvey Tolibao at Druid's Keep

After dinner, we decided to invade another comics shop in the Makati area, Druid's Keep. All of us are also friends with the owner. We just relaxed there and talked about comics, movies, politics, and the highly awaited Pacquiao-Hatton fight.

A much loved hobby, great comics, and awesome people -- a very fun weekend.
